In the 1870’s, Billy was looking forward to a lazy summer in West Texas, waiting for his dad to return home to take their cattle to market. When he doesn’t return, the task of trail boss lands in his lap. On his travels with the herd, he gains an unexpected trail hand and runs into a band of rustlers, the man the Chisholm trail is named after, Bass Reeves, the first black Texas Ranger, and a famous Indian chief. On his return home, he has another unexpected visitor and goes after his dream – a wild stallion in the hills. Billy never considered himself a hero, but others had a different idea.
